Es dürfte sih um eine Währungsrücklage handeln.
Ein Beispiel:Ein Unternehmen bilanziert in Euro, ist aber auch im Dollarraum tätig. Also hat es auch Forderungen in Dollar. Diese werden zum Währungskurs am Bilanzstichtag in Euro umgerechnet und gehen mit diesem Wertansatz in den Forderungsbestand ein. Wenn nun der Dollar gegenüber dem Euro an Wert verliert, stimmt der Wertansatz der Forderungen in Dollar nicht mehr. Um dagegen gewappnet zu sein, wird eine Rücklage gebildet (die auf der Passivseite stehen müsste).
Was für den Forderungsbestand gilt, gilt analog auch für das Anlage- und das Umlaufvermögen.
Es handelt sich also um eine Rücklage zum Auffangen von Währungskursschwankungen.

Methinks the asker's hunch is right and that conversion, on a separate line, has nothing to do with current exchange or 'translation', but of loan capital > Fremdkapital into equity share capital > Eigenkapital.

: Würde hier aber "Kapitalumstellung" verwenden, worauf auch "Economic and Monetary Union Act, 1998" hindeutet: Kontext ist die Kapitalumstellung auf Euro (Währungsumstellung). Seinerzeit gab es ja auch die "Euro-Umstellungsrücklage".
