abd. Funduskontrolle

German to English Medical Medical (general) gynecology
In a German medical report, a curettage was performed after childbirth because intrauterine placental remnants were suspected. This line is within the surgical report:

"Eingehen mit der Bumm'schen Kürette in das Cavum uteri und Kürettage bis zum allseits glatten Wandgefühl under abd. Funduskontrolle。“

I am not sure how to translate the last two words. For "abd.", "abdominal" and "abductor" are two possibilities, or it could be something else.

Appreciate any help!

Hi Aida and/or Stuart :-) A lot of aspects in one (or two) chunk(s)... First, I did not see your proposal when I responded to Brent. Second, I agree with you about "examination" not being the most appropriate choice; but as Stephen mostly asked about "abd.", I chose to agree with "abdominal" and add a comment re palpation, rather than disagreeing for "examination". Third, I read "abdominal fundus" not only in your, but also in Brent's answer (and maybe "abdominal fundus" was even the reason for Tanja to think of the gastric fundus, who knows ;-). In the book Brent quoted, "palpable abdominal fundus" actually appears once, as a sort of shorthand for "abdominally palpable fundus" (ugh!), but the author speaks mostly of "abdominal palpation of the fundus". Similarly, you may say, there is an "abdominal fundus" when the fundus rises above the pubic bone during pregnancy. But, fourth, my comment was driven by grammatical rather than medical concerns. No offense meant to anyone in particular, it is just a sort of "allergen" to me, because I see so many "zweistöckige Hausbesitzer" in translations I receive for proofreading and it drives me nuts that so many people seem to have lost the feel for their own language!
Stuart and Aida Nelson Dec 16, 2020:
@ Anne - abdominal So, are you saying abdominal should not be included in the answer? For what I have seen, the uterine fundus is at abdominal level. I have this link in my answer:

Here, you can see that the fundus is at the level of the abdomen:

To measure the symphysis fundal distance the midwife should place a tape measure at the highest point of the fundus and measure downwards to the upper border of the symphysis pubis (not the pubic hair line

Please forgive me a bit of nitpicking, as I see one of my all-time favourite foes shining through some of the comments: Based on German grammatical conventions, and unlike English conventions, "abd." (which I am sure is "abdominal") qualifies "Kontrolle". This is NOT about an "abdominal fundus". My esteemed colleague Rolf Kern once created (or quoted) on this platform the most illustrative example of a "zweistöckige Hausbesitzer" (two-storey building owner).

abdominal fundus examination

There aren’t tonnes of hits for this…

When the obstetric physician arrives to examine the patient, there is no palpable abdominal fundus

Peer comment(s):

agree Anne Schulz : Fundus palpation might work as well ("Kontrolle" is probably more like holding the uterine fundus)

agree Renee Kulkarni MD : Agree with Anne, I would prefer describing this as palpation of the uterine fundus

examination of the gastric fundus

I think it's the fundus of the stomach that is meant here
Peer comment(s):

neutral Stuart and Aida Nelson : I don't think this is right at all! There's a fundus of the uterus situated at the level of the abdomen / No worries Tanja. It's good to have some doctors here to help us. https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nursing/sonet/rlos/midwifery/ab...

Thanks for clarifying! I really understood this totally wrong.

monitoring of the abdominal fundus (of the uterus)

Under monitoring of the abdominal fundus of the uterus

The curet should be held by the entire hand for a firm grip during the “backstroke” coming out of the uterine cavity, but should be inserted gently to allow palpation of the fundus of the uterus

Here, you can see that the fundus is at the level of the abdomen:

To measure the symphysis fundal distance the midwife should place a tape measure at the highest point of the fundus and measure downwards to the upper border of the symphysis pubis (not the pubic hair line

Abdominal (fundus of uterus)

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321382745_Abdominal...

The fundus of the uterus is the top portion, opposite from the cervix. Fundal height, measured from the top of the pubic bone, is routinely measured in pregnancy to determine growth rates.

Kontrolle = monitoring

And maybe as the Doctors here have suggested and I have also highlighted in my answer this should be:

under palpation of the uterine fundus situated at the abdominal level

Cheers, I hope this helps :)
