essay for progression to the upper year

Some universities seem to require even first-year undergraduate students to submit 進級論文 to progress to the second year, and each year, they need to do so to progress to the next-year level. Hence, "essay" may be a better term than "thesis" for 論文. 進級 here is a progression from one year-level to the one next.

Promoted thesis

I think 進級論文 is the final thesis or dissertation a student writes to achieve a degree and "go up in academic ranking" (学究的進級), such as from Graduate to Master or Master to PHD (Doctor).

I cannot really find an English equivalent term, but it is a thesis that promotes them in their academic ranking. 最後の論文のおかげで学究的に進級ができます。
