Artykuł dotyczy zużycia ściernego szyb samochodowych - szyba samochodowa, wycieraczki, różne rodzaje materiałów ściernych i woda do spłukiwania.
(...) Szybę przed rozpoczęciem badań dla danego rodzaju materiału ściernego docierano tlenkiem ceru, by uzyskać za każdym razem taki sam stan powierzchni szkła.
(...) W miarę zużywania się pióra trzymanie ziaren kwarcu było skuteczniejsze, dlatego następowało tępienie ostrych krawędzi i docieranie szyby.
Autor artykułu wytłumaczył mi, co to znaczy po polsku:
Docieranie to proces w toku polegający na polerowaniu szyby.
Dotarcie to proces zakończony, po przeprowadzeniu którego szyba ma wymaganą przejrzystość.
Dlatego tlenkiem ceru szyba była docierana, by nadać jej odpowiednią przejrzystość.
W czasie pracy wycieraczek twarde ziarna kwarcu lub tlenku glinu rysują powierzchnię ostrymi krawędziami, ale gdy pióro przytrzyma je dłużej, ostre krawędzie tępią się i zamiast rysowania szyba jest ona polerowana.

The lapping step is done using a suspension of 3 µm Al2O3 grains on a
glass lapping plate. This results in a fast removal rate (4 min to thin the die
from 125 µm to 40 µm) with low surface damage after lapping using a plate
rotation speed of 10 rpm.
