Hand lay-up is the traditional technique used in producing composite wind turbine blades. In hand lay-up, the fiber reinforcement is manually inserted into a single-sided mold, and resin is then forced into the fibers using hand rollers and squeegees. The part, in this instance the turbine blade, is allowed to cure and then is removed from the mold. The hand lay-up method can be used to make very large, complex parts — such as wind turbine blades

A Lay-Up process is a moulding process for composite materials, in which the final product is obtained by overlapping a specific number of different layers, usually made of continuous polymeric or ceramic fibres and a thermoset polymeric liquid matrix. It can be divided into Dry Lay-up and Wet Lay-Up, depending on whether the layers are pre-impregnated or not. Dry Lay-up is a common process in the aerospace industry, due to the possibility of obtaining complex shapes with good mechanical properties, characteristics required in this field. On the contrary, as Wet Lay-Up does not allow uni-directional fabrics, which have better mechanical properties, it is mainly adopted for all the other areas, which in general have lower requirements in terms of performances

Metoda kontaktowa lub laminowania ręcznego (ang. hand lay-up)
Jest to najprostsza i najpopularniejsza metoda wytwarzania laminatów. Polega ona na przesycaniu żywicą zbrojenia (maty lub tkaniny) przy pomocy prostych ręcznych narzędzi (pędzle miękkie i twarde, wałki malarskie miękkie, wałki metalowe i do wyciskania powietrza) Pozwala ona na szybkie uruchomienie produkcji nowych wyrobów, przy bardzo niskich kosztach oprzyrządowania. Konieczne jest wykonanie modelu planowanego wyrobu, którym jest zazwyczaj jednostronna skorupowa forma (przeważnie także z kompozytów polimerowych i również wykonana metodą kontaktową). Wielką zaletą tej metody jest brak ograniczeń gabarytowych wyrobu i możliwość wykonywania wyrobów o dość skomplikowanych kształtach. Żywice stosowane do produkcji kompozytów polimerowych są zazwyczaj utwardzane bez stosowania podwyższonej temperatury a formowanie wyrobów można realizować przez nakładanie warstw mat lub tkanin z włókien wzmacniających na prostą jednostronną formę. Warstwy tych mat lub tkanin są następnie przesycanie żywicą np. za pomocą pędzla lub wałka.
