Discussion

Christopher Schröder Oct 10, 2021:
I think it will vary with context. Well-balanced? Self-awareness? Has a bit of perspective? Not up themselves? etc etc
Michele Fauble Oct 10, 2021:
For a single term, contextless translation, I think the literal solution (self-distancing/self-distance) is the safest.
Tariq Khader (asker) Oct 10, 2021:
I have more context for you... I thought it might be difficult. 🙂

I imagine Swedes would be familiar with how the word is used, but here are two example sentences I’ve found online which are pretty typical:

Han saknade självdistans och kunde aldrig skratta åt vare sig sig själv eller någon annan vanlig människa i konungariket Sverige.

En bra förebild för barn och ungdomar är en person som utstrålar trygghet och självdistans, som kan bjuda på sig själv och inte strävar efter perfektion.

@ Tariq Hello
I think you should still give context if there is any as we have quite a few expressions that put more or less emphasise on one thing or another (big headed, dreamer, intellect, etc.)

objectivity

This works in the two sentences you gave but I doubt it would work in all contexts.

aloofness ; self-possession

A KudoZ Swedish respondent had hit on 'self-awareness' fifteen years ago, but wonder whether negative aloofness : 'my ex-English public school tutor at Surrey had been tall and aloof' or more positive self-possession isn't meant.
Example sentence:

Respondents showed warmth, objectivity, "engagemang och självdistans"... English translation: commitment and self awareness

Aloofness and Self-possession are synonymous, and they have mutual synonyms. Aloofness noun – A disposition to be distant and unsympathetic in manner.

disagree Christopher Schröder : It’s not negative

Both are still close to the original term.

self-distance

Wiktionary definition: Noun. self-distance (usually uncountable, plural self-distances) The ability to critically reflect on oneself and one's relations from an external perspective. Ironic humor is an instance of the more general phenomenon of self-distance (Contemporary Philosophy of Social Science, By Brian Faypage, Page 33)

I rather suspect that the Swedish självdistans originated as a direct translation of English self-distance
