I have a little doubt about the following dialogue from a cartoon. Two people are talking about their hobbies.
ふだん、何してるの？
(What are you usually doing?)
音楽。
(Music.)
In your opinion, can this only mean that the second person is actively doing music (composing songs, playing an instrument) or she could just like listening to songs?

I just listen to music.
It obviously depends. However, in general, I would say that the second person is saying that she is just listening to music, rather than more actively involved in music such as composing or playing music. This is mainly because listening to music, rather than making music, is what more people do. Also the question, ふだん、何してるの？ is asking the way she spends time when she is free, or pastime, rather than more active activities.

If she plays the trumpet, it changes a lot. "Music" probably means much more than a pastime for her. You know extracurricular (club) activities are far more important for Japanese high school students than, say, Canadian students. For translation, I would just put it "Music" to be safe, and to be closer to what the speaker actually says.
