Spanish term

góndola madrina

Spanish to English Other Automotive / Cars & Trucks
MEXICO. This appears to be a type of semitrailer. It appears without context in software strings that I’m translating. The usage example below is taken from a random website.

"La unidad recuperada es un tráiler modelo 2001, color blanco, placas 466DD6 del Servicio Público Federal, acoplado a un semirremolque tipo góndola madrina, marca Cotrell, modelo 2000, placas 841VS3 también del SPF, sin carga."

@patinba Yeah, I think he was just suggesting that as a get-out rather than a definitive solution. However, thanks for pointing out that these are railway wagons (although why they call them "carro" beats me), as we had no idea and assumed it was about road transport.
patinba Jan 21, 2022:
@Neil Carro especial
If your client had read the actual context he would not have made the mistake of thinking carro is a vehicle. Your list is of types of railway wagon, and TC 09 carro especial is just "Special wagon"
Helena Chavarria Jan 20, 2022:
I would have translated it as 'special truck'. Yesterday I saw a few references but they didn't convince me.

neilmac (asker) Jan 20, 2022:
Carro Especial The client says to just translate "carro" as vehicle... Which seems a bit of a copout but hey, they say "the customer is always right"... :-)
neilmac (asker) Jan 19, 2022:
The terms I'm translating ... appear on this site https://appscamelot.com/catalogos-complemento-carta-porte-sa...
Now I'm stuck on ""TC09 Carro Especial"...
I'm sure there must be an official or quasi-official list of these terms in English, as they are used in international transport, but I'm damned if I can find it.
Helena Chavarria Jan 19, 2022:

Helena Chavarria Jan 19, 2022:
Aren't góndolas nodriza and madrina the same? Nodriza o madrina: Vehículo generalmente articulado que se utiliza para el transporte de automóviles armados entre las plantas de producción y los centros de distribución o para entregas directas en agencias automotrices.

The reference I posted is basically the same as the one Phil found, with the same information.
philgoddard Jan 19, 2022:
The URL in Lisa's reference is incorrect - here's the correct version
https://idoc.pub/documents/transporte-madrina-y-gondola-x4e6...
It does explain both words, but it doesn't make clear whether they're synonyms. I wonder if one is enclosed and one isn't.
neilmac (asker) Jan 19, 2022:
@Helena That's really handy to know, because "Góndola" just cropped up on its own in another string, and I was wondering how to translate it. Thanks again!
Helena Chavarria Jan 19, 2022:
In the transport company where I teach English, 'góndolas' are flatbed trailers.
neilmac (asker) Jan 19, 2022:
@phil Yes. If they'd called it "Remolque portaautomóviles" I'd have had no problem with it, but "gondola" to me suggests those boats they have in Venice, or maybe a nacelle, and the "madrina" part just seemed so odd...
philgoddard Jan 19, 2022:
Here's the correct URL: https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/madrina.655911/
Cottrell does mainly make car transporter trailers, and you could probably get away with that as a translation, but I wonder if it's a particular kind of transporter.

neilmac (asker) Jan 19, 2022:
Remolque portaautomóviles As sometimes happens, after posting the query I found a link (https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/madrina.655911/) which suggests it’s a car transporter (Remolque portaautomóviles).
I’ll leave the query open anyway, because I think this sort of thing should be in the glossaries.

car hauler

It is what was involved if you read the news article, and it is all that Cottrell make.

a type of vehicular unit

The reference below explains that it's a type of vehicular unit, probably in the form of a trailer attached on to a lorry, truck or another type of vehicle used for transportation. It has a maximum length stipulated at 31 metres, with a maximum width of 2.60 metres. That measurement does not include rear mirrors or secure fastenings, attachments or any other add-ons to secure or safe-guard the load. Such accessories must not exceed a length of 20cm on either side of the vehicle.

A car carrier trailer, also known as a car-carrying trailer, car hauler, or auto transport trailer, is a type of trailer or semi-trailer designed to efficiently transport passenger vehicles via truck.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_carrier_trailer

I think it's a car carrier or whatever you choose to call it but because I started posting here, I'll carry on.
Note from asker:
I'm calling it a "car transporter" for now, which is what I'd normally call a Remolque portaautomóviles. The difference between Mexican and Spanish terminologies is amazing.
