Spanish term

Fotografismo

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy Graphic Design Curriculum
This is part of the Graphic Design curriculum at the University of Buenos Aires, and it appears under the heading "La Fotografía", and reads "La fotografía, el fotografismo, la retórica fotográfica. La imagen de la imagen".

I did a quick search and found this definition: El fotografismo es la técnica fotográfica de alternar la realidad con gráficos insertados. Esto se resume a interpolar técnicas collage con fotografías reales, consiguiendo una técnica casi exclusiva publicitaria.

At first, I thought this was the same as photoshop, but apparently it goes a bit beyond that, because it has been in practice for a very long time.

Does anyone know if there is an English term for this?

Fontcuberta & Costa (1988) propose the concept
of **Fotografismo (Photo-graphics)** to characterize the
interventional process to combine, manipulate and
modify the photographic image, according to a free
expressive finality and a specific message that it’s
going to be communicated, mostly as a form of art. As
explained by the author, it’s necessary to tear the term
apart from the concept of Foto-diseño (Photo-design)
in which the photographer and the graphic designer
join forces and give birth to a new graphic project.
These different applications have in common the use of
photography with communicative purposes, but in the
first case there’s an alteration of the picture, justified by
its expressive finality.

Manipulation Through Editing, Concept and
Composition
According to Fontcuberta & Costa (1988), photography
has evidenced an evolving nature, opposed to the original
idea of the discipline as a faithful portrayal of reality.
This new determination attempts to modify reality,
displaying new aspects beyond the evident and identical
exposure of the environment. Alteration of reality
by framing or decontextualizing can be considered
wrong or inappropriate, according to disciplinary or
ethical standards like the National Press Photographers
Association, NPPA’s codes. Despite these varieties of
regulations, photographers’ artwork and behavior are
not restricted or censored.

Thanks Neil. BTW, the Asker (Mariela) has chosen "photographism (photo-graphics)" which may be a "new/coined" word to many of us. I certainly did not see this term in my research.

Whether it’s a grainy portrait of Pablo Picasso or a stark picture of ginkgo leaves, you know an Irving Penn photo when you see one. They exude elegance and minimalism, the work of an undisputed master of 20th-century photography.

A new retrospective honoring the photographer is now on view in New York. A selection of photographs from the 1930s to the 2000s can be seen at Pace Gallery until 13 February, in an exhibition called Photographism.

But is “photographism” even a word? Not entirely. It is, though, a term that was coined by the photographer. It isn’t a theory, but an idea supported by sketches, notes, photographs and posters. When Penn had his studio in the Flatiron District of Manhattan, he had a manila envelope labeled with the word.

“It was part of the working files of the studio,” said Vasilios Zatse, deputy director of the Irving Penn Foundation, who previously worked in Penn’s studio.

“It was a folder with some sketches, then it became more than one box that had labels that contained posters that were earmarked for ‘Photographism’,” he added. “Penn left us with not so much a road map, but enough material as a jumping off point to consider for an exhibition.”

Though trained as a painter, Irving Penn (1917–2009) began working as a photographer in the 1940s for high-fashion magazines, notably Vogue, one of the few platforms where experimental photography could be shown at the time. Integrating the printed page of the magazine while also distinguishing itself from this ground, Penn’s work radically modernized various genres of photography, including still life, portraiture, and editorial fashion photography. His unique stylistic approach—what Penn termed his “photographism”—consisted in a formal distillation that drew from print media’s typography and graphic design, as well as the fine arts of drawing, painting, and sculpture, among others. While Penn never explicitly defined photographism, his annotated sketches on the subject give insight into his antihierarchical thinking, based in the crosspollination of mediums.

Note from asker:
"But is “photographism” even a word? Not entirely. It is, though, a term that was coined by the photographer." So, therein lies the question: is it ok to use a word that is not a word?
