Hello,
I would like your advise on the term "lead-cutin" in the following phrase:

"Verify that the (...) air brakes are lead-cutin and released"

I just can't seem to put a finger on it.

Thank you for the explanation (for some reason, I didn't get the notifications of the answers). "lead" can also mean wires, so it was confusing, but based on the other answer, it seems that these two words go together.

@ Asker Does this document originate from the US, by any chance? This sounds like fairly typical US phraseology.
I would instinctively interpret it along these lines:
First, I think 'cutin' and 'release' refers to the brakes going on or coming off. It's not unusual to use 'cutin' for something starting to operate (and cf. a 'safety cutout'!).
If that is indeed the case, then I'd assume 'lead' means 'before / in advance of' something else happening — we might think of it as being 'in the lead', or perhaps the opposite of 'lag(ging)'
So with these ideas, maybe you will be able to glean further clues from your wider context? What may help is to see if anywhere else in your text any of these terms are opposed with others? Obviously, it might be helpful to have more context, in particular, perhaps, what field this is in, and what type of 'braking' is taking place?

"LEAD CUT-IN or SINGLE UNIT - Independent brake control is available via the electronic brake valve (EBV) Independent handle. Equalizing reservoir (ER) control is available via the EBV Automatic handle. The brake pipe pressure is ‘Cut-In’ and follows equalizing reservoir pressure. When the Auto handle is moved to Release (REL), ER and brake pipe (BP) will charge to the ER release pressure determined during Air Brake setup."

As opposed to
"LEAD CUT-OUT - Independent brake control is available via the EBV Independent handle. ER control is available via the EBV Automatic handle. The brake pipe pressure is ‘Cut-Out’ and is not controlled by equalizing reservoir pressure. Automatic brakes apply and release in response to trainline brake pipe pressure reductions and increases."

Other possibilities include "Passenger", "Trail cut-out" and "Dead-in-train" which has nothing to do with the Orient Express.

Air pressure is usually measured in kiloPascals (kPa) or pounds per square inch (psi). The normal pressure range of an air brake system is determined by the points where the air compressor is turned on (cut-in pressure) and turned off (cut-out pressure).

neutral Tony M : Ah, if it's RAILWAY, then that changes everything! 'lead' opposing 'trail' now makes sense; sorry not to 'Agree', but I don't have specialist knowledge in thie field — but I'd certainly agree this seems plausible!
