Spanish term

carrera

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy Medical Course Curriculum
I know this has been asked many times before but I'm still not clear for my purposes today. I have just spent (wasted?) half an hour on UBA website trying to establish whether their postgraduate course "Medical Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging", described in my document as a "Carrera" is considered a Degree, a Certificate or something else.

I was quite happily translating "carrera" as "course" until I hit this road block:

'...cambió la categoría de "Curso" por la de "Carrera de Médicos Especialistas en Diagnóstico por Imágenes"

After reading a few other proz answers I decided to change to "degree" but now after doing a bit more research, I've decided that it isn't necessarily a degree and to call it such would be misleading.

@ Catherine I think what is unclear is the differentiation the source text makes between 'curso' and 'carrera'. Can you provide the entire sentence and give us more context, please? Strictly speaking a specialist in diagnostic imaging is a radiologist which is a specialist physician. However, there are diagnostic imaging assistants in the radiology department at least in the UK. Is the source text referring to a radiologist or an assistant? This background information would be useful to get the right translation, Cheers, Aida

In Argentina, when you are studying at university, you are doing a course of studies to obtain a degree. When you finally graduate and obtain that degree, you start your career as a professional. In this case, the person has already finished the course of studies at university and is starting a new one, a postgraduate course of studies. If this person finishes the course, s/he will gain the degree of Medical Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging. I think this specific course lasts four years, like a graduate course of studies, such course appears within the list of specializations (Especializaciones). I believe that is the point. I attach the link where I found the postgraduate course of studies.

I hope it can somehow help!

Definition of degree course:
a course of studies leading toward a degree : an academic subject accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a degree.
Note from asker:
But, as I said, I'm not sure that it is a degree. A degree is a specific level of course in English. Not all postgraduate courses are degrees and the UBA international website here: https://www.uba.ar/internacionales/contenido.php?id=468&lang=en&msclkid=a0e9199aaa5711ec9d682d4cd30a21pt doesn't list it as a degree, where there are others taht are listed at least as 'Master's Degree'

university course

Another option could be "program/programme" if you really want to avoid using "course"...

"Programme for Physicians Specializing in Diagnostic Imaging"
"Specialist diagnostic imaging programme (or course) for physicians"
etc...
Example sentence:

In Italy, RTTs receive their bachelor's degree after a three-year university course in diagnostic imaging
