Difficult to say for certain, but I think they're talking about moving onwards and upwards as they became keener to play nd more players became involved. The text talks about the expansion of the playing area as players reached new levels after starting off on the small side. This is about an increase in scale, in my opinion, as more people joined in and the payers got better at it, after starting with small beginnings; there are so many references to scale I think it means this, and not keeping score , or taking the game more seriously, although the latter was obviously part of the natural progression of things.
