Dutch term

pendelgas

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng patent application
context:

system for processing liquid waste constining organic solvents

some of my context (changed for confidentiality):

Discussion

Barend van Zadelhoff Feb 14, 2023:
@ Michael Of course you know that 'gas shuttle system' is something completely different from 'shuttle gas'.

But if anyone can find a somewhat reliable reference for 'shuttle gas' meaning 'gas dat nu eens de ene richting op beweegt en dan weer de andere richting', I will be happy to agree.

This is what you can find for 'shuttle gas':

NASA detects suspect in shuttle gas leak.
Space Shuttle Gas Leak Is Sealed.
Space Shuttle Gas Tank
Michael Beijer (asker) Feb 14, 2023:
Gaspendelung (German) see e.g.: https://www.lutzpumps.com/gaspendelsystem-stationaeren-betri... (note German in URL: ‘gaspendelsystem’)

‘Gas shuttle system’

which is a similar concept to what's going on in my text

Barend van Zadelhoff Feb 14, 2023:
But let it be clear, 'shuttling gas' most of the time occurs in structures like these:

These masquerade as taxis but in fact spend all day shuttling gas back and forth across the border.
Barend van Zadelhoff Feb 14, 2023:
Perhaps it can be understood as an adjective, but it won't be in this case.

I am pretty sure about that.

'shuttle gas' is just a 'false friend', an incorrect 'literal' translation.

Als 'pendelgas' moet betekenen 'gas dat nu eens de ene richting op beweegt en dan weer de andere richting', kun je niet aan komen zetten met 'shuttle gas', misschien met 'shuttling gas'.

Shuttling Gas. Unlike typical internal combustion engines, the Stirling engine is powered by heat from an external source. In the Ford-Philips design (see diagram), hydrogen gas is heated by a burner, which can run on virtually any kind of fuel. The sealed-in hydrogen then expands, enters one cylinder and pushes a sliding piston. As the piston moves, it forces gas out of the other end of the cylinder; the emerging gas is cooled and then moves toward an adjacent cylinder where heat is applied once more and the process is repeated. As the gas shuttles between interconnected cylinders, the pistons move back and forth and piston rods push against a so-called swash plate, or disk.

Jack den Haan Feb 14, 2023:
@Barend: In English grammar, a verb can be understood as an adjective. That is indeed the case here. Google "verb as an adjective", for example, or just check a good text book on English grammar ;-)
Barend van Zadelhoff Feb 14, 2023:
Ik know 'shuttle' is a verb as well.

However, in 'shuttle gas' 'shuttle' will be understood as a noun:

shuttle gas = gas that functions as a shuttle
shuttle gas = gas related to / in / from a shuttle

It is not understood as a verb in 'shuttle gas'.

That is what I am sying.
Jack den Haan Feb 14, 2023:
@Barend: Shuttle does not have to be understood as a noun at all. Oxford Dictionary of English: ▶verb [no obj., with adverbial of direction] travel regularly between two or more places: the Secretary of State shuttled to and fro seeking compromise. ■[with obj. and adverbial of direction] transport in a shuttle: the river taxi shuttled employees between the newspaper's offices and the capital.
Barend van Zadelhoff Feb 14, 2023:
This noun issue was apart from the question whether this 'pendelgas' is actually going back and forth in your situation?

[And if so, what would be the correct translation?]
Michael Beijer (asker) Feb 14, 2023:
ha ha If I'm honest, I love it when a client tells me what term to use, since I can stop thinking/searching/Googling and just use it ;-)
Barend van Zadelhoff Feb 14, 2023:
awkward customer of yours :-) 'shuttle' in 'shuttle gas' will be understood as a noun, which was not intended.

shuttle gas = gas that functions as a shuttle
shuttle gas = gas related to / in / from a shuttle

Don't you agree?

Michael Beijer (asker) Feb 13, 2023:
client got back to me! I asked: So far, I have translated this as ‘recovered vapour’ and ‘vapour recovery network’. However, a colleague of mine also suggested ‘shuttle gas’. Do you have a preference?

They answered: Please use the word ‘shuttle gas’, thanks.

~

So I went with:

"shuttle gas [in Dutch: pendelgas]"
"shuttle gas network [in Dutch: pendelgasnetwerk]"
Michael Beijer (asker) Feb 12, 2023:
what I have so far: pendelgas = "recovered vapor/gas" (or "displaced vapour/gas")
pendelgasnetwerk = "vapor recovery network"
Michael Beijer (asker) Feb 12, 2023:
juremy.com see: https://juremy.com/search?src=deu&dst=eng&q=gaspendelung

Gaspendelung =

Back-venting of the liquid pitch storage tank

5.2. Vapour-collection detection Loading must not be permitted unless the vapour-collection hose has been connected to the vehicle and there is a free passage for the displaced vapours to flow from the vehicle into the plant vapour-collection system.

=> Dampfpendelschlauch = vapour-collection hose

I seem to be getting somewhere see:

Gaspendelung = gas removal, vapour return, vapour recovery, gas displacement

shuttle gas

In the patent application document you are translating, I would translate this as shuttle gas, specifying the Dutch source term between square brackets after the first occurrence of the term. See the link below.

Thanks, P. Even if correct, anything else would be a rather liberal interpretation of the source term IMO. That should NEVER be done in patent app. translations. Even the greatest nonsense should be translated as closely as possible to the source text ;-)

LNG is brought onto the vessel and taken along the spray line to the main vaporiser, which boils off the liquid into gas. This is then warmed up to roughly 20 °C (68 °F) in the gas heaters and then blown into the tanks to displace the "inert gas".

Bulk loading starts and liquid LNG is pumped from the storage tanks ashore into the vessel tanks. Displaced gas is blown ashore by the HD compressors.

A couple of points:

1) My third reference is just meant to show what 'displaced gas' stands for and is in line with the 'pendelgas' refs.
2) What you find online about 'pendelgas' is mostly if not exclusively about 'displaced gas'.
3) Is this 'pendelgas' in your text going back and forth?
