Discussion

Brendan McNally (asker) Apr 20, 2023:
Hi Johannes, I'm not sure I quite understand your logic of why the two can't both be financed from the same fund. However, your comment did cause me to look more closely at the actual figures, which on reflection I should have incuded in the question.

Bundesmittel §42 Abs. 2 = 1 655,9
dv. Annuitäten Rahmenplan (Zuzahlung Neubauprogramm) = 1 241,0
dv. Instandhaltung (Bestandsnetz) = 414,8

They show that the two types of expenditure do in fact add up almost exactly to the figure of the federal funds, which is strong evidence that dv. is indeed short for davon.

Sorry again, I should have included these figures, they would have made it easier to work out the meaning. Maybe because I'm a linguist and not a mathematician!
Thanks all for your time.

Johannes Gleim Apr 20, 2023:
@ Brendon If I expand the acronym "dv." with "davon" and insert amounts, I get, for example:
500 million € in federal funds according to §42 para. 2,
of which €200 million for pensions in the framework plan (additional payment for new construction program), and of which again to € million for maintenance (existing network).
This seems illogical to me, because new construction and the existing network may not be fed from the same federal funds, but from different ones. The maintenance of existing infrastructure is usually not financed as a sub-part of a new construction program, as if you also spent something to the maintenance of the existing structure when you build a new one. On the contrary, the existing structure must always be maintained, even if no new construction takes place.

Question: Can you please indicate, which investments are taken in which sector und why maintenance is part of the new construction?

These seem to be sub-items ("Davon-Positionen" - many search hits for this German term). Please check if this fits the logic of your document. See also https://www.buhl-unternehmer.de/hilfe/finanzbuchhaltung/anha...

It will be difficult to find relevant sources for "dv." in the sense of "davon" in a search because it will yield loads of irrelevant hits pointing to "Datenverarbeitung" and related meanings (ignoring the full stop).
Note from asker:
Thanks, that sounds plausible, I had wondered if it might be short for davon, it would fit the context better, but it would be good to find a usage example for dv. if possible, though it could just be an inhouse abbreviation.
Yes, you're right, that's what I've found, that's why I was hoping someone would have a usage example. Thanks again!

Operating Expenses: include those expenses which are directly related to the fund's primary service activity. FY 2007 shows an 8.5% increase. The increase in Power Supply is responsible for a major portion of the change. Other increases in Utilities, Services & Misc. for maintenance/service contracts for utilities and an increase in the amount budgeted for street maintenance also contribute to this change.
