German term

cHCO3-(P,St)c

German to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng Acid-base status
I'm working on a medical translation and this is a measurement on a patient.

So far I have "calculated concentration of bicarbonate". Is this correct?

What would P and St stand for?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Thank you Thanks for all the responses. This was indeed a blood gas measurement so I left the term as is.
Cenk Başaran Aug 24, 2023:
Leave it as it is This must be a blood gas measurement, and the devices usually report with English acronyms, so you may leave it as it is. Physicians reading this would understand.
Zoi Patrinou Aug 23, 2023:
You are right about the hits, but that doesn't mean it is correct. Linguistically, it doesn't seem to be wrong. And don't forget how many words are used in a false way. I cannot insist, because this is not really my domain. Just giving some food for thought about the hits or regular use of a word.😊
Róbert Hanczkó, Ph.D. Aug 23, 2023:
Standard vs standardised Zoi, The authors must have got it wrong then. Compare the number of hits on "standard hco3-" vs "standardized hco3-". The former has much more hits. Thus, it seems to be more in use.

st = standard, P = plasma

HCO3; St HCO3 (SBC); TCO2

TCO2 is sum of HCO3- and amount of CO2 dissolved in plasma. For each mmHg PaCO2, 0.03 ml CO2 is dissolved per 100 ml of plasma. As HCO3- values change with CO2 levels, standard bicarbonate (st HCO3-) is used to denote value of HCO3-, independent of CO2 changes (i.e., at PaCO2 of 40 and temperature of 37°C).

standardized plasma bicarbonate concentration

According to the National Library of Medicine.
Have a look at the link. Hope I helped 😉

disagree Róbert Hanczkó, Ph.D. : This is not a standardized value. The measurement is carried out under standard conditions.

Actual and standardized plasma bicarbonate concentration [HCO3- (P) and HCO3- (P, st)]. That's the exact text on NLM. That's why the -ized. I followed my source. Please read the reference. I think we mean the same...

Standard bicarbonate plasma concentration

This is a measured value - not a calculated one - under standard conditions, hence, "st" is for standard. "P" is for plasma.
