Creo que se puede apretar más. Diría que se refiere a un vehículo eléctrico, por eso lo usan para investigación.

Si, hasta cierto punto me parece correcto que sea un prototipo pero me confunde el "And now it's living out its retirement here in our test facility" porque si está "jubilado" quizás no haya sido antes uno eléctrico.
Para evitar esa disyuntiva, creo que con que lo traduzcas como vehículo es suficiente; mi propuesta:
¿Qué hacen Uds aquí?
