Celem politycznym stało się połączenie języków nynorsk i bokmål w jedną formę, tzw. samnorsk (wspólny norweski). Z tego pomysłu zrezygnowano w latach 60-tych, a nynorsk i bokmål rozwinęły się jako dwie równoległe odmiany norweskiego języka pisanego.
