To guarantee transmission, connection-oriented protocols such as ATM pre-test end-to-end connectivity by checking the existence of a PNNI (private network to network interface) route, which allows an end-to-end SVC (switched virtual circuit). PNNI route calculation is established first, and then calls are permitted if the PNNI route meets their criteria, using call admission control (CAC).
Similarly, a robust softswitch knows all possible routes — including traversal of IP and TDM networks. It checks that a path for the call exists with the desired parameters (eg, latency, jitter, packet loss and so forth) and has alternate paths pre-selected in the event of a failure along the first path. It monitors the state of the connection periodically and maintains state for all possible end-to-end routes.
