Terence Ajbro
: this may be the legal term for it, but it does not have the same vernacular ring to it as "union libre". In common speech people say "living together"

You are right, Terence. Context is fundamental.

disagree |
Margarita Palatnik (X)
: this is not a legal context, and unión libre is not necessarily the same thing as common-law marriage, not if the cohabitation lasts less than 7 or 10 years, for example

Of course you could just translate it as \" ...who choose to live together without getting married\". That\'s how it is commonly put.

de facto relationship
an alternative, denoting couples who live together as if they were married but are not legally so. I think the best alternative for this question depends on the tone of the rest of the text - if it's lighthearted, then something like 'just living together' is probably better, otherwise de facto or something more formal like that would fit.

also, perhaps they are not talking about living together either, perhaps the text refers to couples who just \'go out\' with each other, without living together or formalising their relationship in other ways. In which case the answer could be \'opt for a less formal relationship\' or \'opt for a free relationship\' (although the last one has other connotations...)
