"Kleider stehen für den ersehnten Frieden, für ein bisschen Wohlstand über das täglich Brot hinaus, für Lebensgier und die lang entbehrte Schönheit": this is referring to women in postwar Germany. At the mo' I have: "the opportunity – denied to them for so long – to dress up again" but am not quite happy. Appreciate any input!

How about "long-lost finery"?
I had toyed with "long-lost cosmetic/sartorial luxury", but that missed the mark somewhat. Perhaps it'll spur you on to better ideas, though.
