From the context it would appear that the phrase refers to the incorporation of a company recorded by a civil law notary, so I do not believe that using the term "deed" here would be appropriate, since a deed is a document transferring title to property (Black's 7th: deed-"a written instrument by which land is conveyed; at common law, any written instrument that is signed, sealed, and delivered and that conveys some interest in property.") Several translator forums have discussed the generalized notion of inappropriately equating "escritura" with "deed" when describing a document recorded by a civil law notary that does not involve a conveyance of land. For example, at the ATA Legal Translation Conference in May, 2003, Daniel Giglio gave a presentation on the "Translation of Notarial Clauses from Latin American Spanish into English" in which he underscored that "escritura pública" is a "notarially recorded instrument or document. (...) Not the same as a deed, which is an instrument that conveys land." I agree with the comment that sometimes online references are not reliable, but I also believe that there is often much to be learned online. The online sources I cite are from two prestigious translation journals, \"The Gotham Translator\" (newsletter of the New York Circle of Translators) and \"Intercambios\" (the Quarterly Newsletter of the Spanish Division of the American Translators Association). Both publish articles by reputable translators which I almost always find quite enlightening. The articles I cited are summaries of presentations given by Daniel Giglio (a specialist in the translation of notarial documents) at the ATA Legal Translation Conference held in May, 2003 and the II Congreso Latinoamericano de Traducción e Interpretación held in Buenos Aires in April, 2001.
