Arabic to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
How would you translate the word التعويض in the following passage from a short story about chess where the narrator plays chess against opponents in a cafe and always wants to replay opponents who beat him in the game?

to retaliate or to take revenge

It's human nature. We normally don't like to be defeated, and we seek revenge from those who hurt us even though we're not in the battlefield. Therefore, I think it's appropriate to translate it into "to retaliate or to take revenge" because our intention of repeating playing a game is to win and make up for our loses.
