Fundamental: a necessary base or core, an essential part of a foundation or basis.
Foundational: arising from or going to the root or source; denoting an underlying basis or principle, as in "the foundational principles of a religion."
Given the form that this adjective takes in the Arabic, I think this is "foundational study" not fundamental.
