Edit Decision List (EDL)

"When an editor was satisfied with the final film, he or she would create an edit decision list, a list of each shot in the film and its length."

"The EDL is the list of all the elements that make up the final result, and the position those elements will take in the final result. Those elements will also be described in some fashion, so that the editor will know what the piece is (this is production house dependent). But, the important part is that the EDL will contain a list of SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) time codes. Those time codes exactly describe the position of the elements within the final result. The EDL for a program like B5 is very complicated."

An Edit Decision List or EDL is a standard way of representing a film or video edit. It contains an ordered list of reel and timecode data representing where each video clip can be obtained in order to conform the final cut. Typically these are paper documents constructed by hand or printed by a linear editing system.
They are also often used in the digital video editing world, so rather than referring to reels they refer to sequences of images stored on disk.
