Catalan term

Trofeu previ

Catalan to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
There isn't really any context, just some type of prize/trophy. Of course, previ is the word that is getting me.

Discussion

S Ben Price (asker) Jun 10, 2008:
This is from a calendar of events, the full entry reads " REGATA REI EN JAUME Trofeu previ" Are they giving away the trophy before?? Really, I still don't know what to do with this.

Now that you've given the a bit of context, perhaps I can give a better answer. I found more context online (below). Based on this, I'd THINK I'd just say "trophy event" and leave it at that.

If you really feel you need to reflect the "previ", maybe you could consider "advance trophy event" (though this sounds awkward to me).

I think in the context I found (which seems to be the same as yours), preliminary trophy EVENT would work (i.e., it's before the main event).

Please ignore my first answer, which was posted before the context appeared!
Note from asker:
Thanks, that works. I went with preliminary trophy. Same thing. Although I'm still not sure what it could mean.

trophy before/previous to

'Previ' generally means 'before' or 'previous' e.g.

Here the trophies were presented *before* the football match.

Without more context, I cannot be more precise about the meaning in your case though.

previ = previo ?

It could be...I am sure that you know that previ means prior because the translation would have been obvious.
Have a great day

Obviously not :) (I read your note). I find a reference to a placement test in a language school (http://www.verlaine-langue.com/index-ct.htm), in which the "placement test" is calle "test previ de nivell". I never used the word in this context but maybe this is the way to go...
