religious clergy Explanation: In my opinion, the "word" clergy would have been enough. There is a distinction between religious (or rather, regular) clergy and secular clergy, but the latter is not non-religious. The religious or regular clergy committed themselves by a vow to live under a special rule, in Latin regula (hence "regular"); the seculars lived in the world (saeculum). (Catholic Encyclopedia) But this distinction is not relevant in this context where the subject is the form of "clergy" created by Shiism as different from the mainstream Sunnite tradition. I think the author used the term religious clergy for emphasis (since, no clergy is supposed to exist in islam) or just to follow the general saying. Nevertheless, I suggest it should be translated as "religious clergy," since this was the choice of the author. And this expression is rather commonly used today (not always deliberately pointing to such a distinction) Reference: Own background in religious history http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13675a.htm |
