Czech term

mateřské centrum

Czech to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Do these even exist in the US / UK / Canada / ?? It's a sort of 'clubhouse' for mothers with babies and small children under the age of 3 or 4 where the mothers can play and socialize LOL ... there are usually some activities for the children and workshops for the mothers. Funded by cities, towns, and the companies that hold workshops there.

Thanks!

Elizabeth Spacilova (asker) Sep 7, 2009:
BTW - context - a very brief blurb about a woman in her 50s who is the director of the "Materske centrum". It has a certain community non-profit/NGO ring to it... well, I guess cuz that's what it is. I think this Materske centrum concept came from Germany...

mothers' center

"Mothers' center" is used in the US. I have used it in translations in the past.
Example sentence:

The Mothers’ Center of the South Shore was formed over 10 years ago to promote the positive aspects of parenthood and families by offering playgroups, parent education and support groups, parent and child activities and resource materials.

playgroup

this is the term used in Australia and New Zealand - parents/caregivers and children from birth to school age get together giving an opportunity for children to play and for parents to socialise
Peer comment(s):

disagree Blanka Salkova : this is different, funded usually by the town/kind of official thing

Us fathers have to take the kids to them as well... :)

quote: 'Whether you call them Mother and Baby groups, Parent and Toddler groups, Stay and Play or just toddler groups, they all mean the same thing and are run for carers of babies and toddlers.'

I have not read your explanation before. Anyway, mateřské centrum, is not a place to abandon your child there, that would be kindergarten or nursery. This is a place, where the parent should be together with his/her child.
Note from asker:
I don't think the local mateřské centrum would be too happy if I abandoned my son there :-S
jenže maternal center je obvykle spojené s baby boxem
