disagree Chris Hopley : Given Salma's other questions would tend to indicate form fields, I don't think 'residence' is the most appropriate way to go.

City

If it is a field that you have to fill in for a form (on an Internet site for example) then it is usually translated as City (or Town).

neutral writeaway : I know it's in Van Dale, but I think it would be very risky to translate woonplaats like this on a regular basis.

It's standard practice in CRM packages. Microsoft translates it thus too. You can download their glossaries from: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/developr/msdn/newup/Glossary/. I can't see the risk at all.
agree Tina Vonhof (X) : Standard practice on forms with fields.

Thank you!
agree Lucy Spring : You will often see a space for 'adres' and then one for 'woonplaats'. Wolters translates it as '(place of) residence', i.e. town/city where you live.

officiele naam voor verblijf/woonplaats
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : on some legal and official documents, but not as a general term.
21 mins
agree Marijke Singer : If it is an offical document then this is correct. De VanDale Dutch - Dutch dictionary says: 'synoniem: domicilie' for woonplaats.

neutral Tina Vonhof (X) : Only on some official documents, not commonly used.

"Woonplaats"

Do not translate "woonplaats" if it is meant as part of the address details. In Dutch, a distinction is invariably made between "adres" and "woonplaats", whereas in English, "woonplaats" is part and parcel of the address.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : Correct if there are no separate fields.
26 mins
agree Lucy Spring : As Tina says, only if there are no separate fields. Increasingly, English usage is splitting address details into 'house name or number and street', 'town/city', 'postcode', rather than giving you simply an option to fill in 'address'.

city of residence

Het ligt aan de context hoe je dit zou gebruiken. Dit is voor een webpage niet juist maar voor een opstel, boek, of een ander soort werkstuk zou dit de juiste vertaling zijn.
PS city kan vervangen worden door town
