English term or phrase: confused between two sentences
Hello,

Context:
Blacklock believes the world of business and the arts are too far apart: ‘Aesthetics and ethics are closely linked and when the world of art is too far from business, it becomes easy to tolerate ugly behaviour.’

Question:

I am translating this into Arabic, and I am confused with the relation between the sentence in red and the one in blue.

I need to understand why is it easy to tolerate ugly behaviour if the world of art and business are far apart, and what does this have to do with aesthetics and ethics being closely linked.

Any help?

Explanation:
I think the following segment is what caused the confusion:

"when the world of art is too far from business"

The author could have said:

"when the world of business is too far from art"

... which has the exact same meaning, but would connect better with the next segment: "it becomes easy to tolerate ugly behavior."

It's the world of business that is implied to be susceptible to corruption and ugly behavior when deprived of the influence of arts (because aesthetics and ethics are closely linked). Let the world of business be imbued with the nobleness and morals of the realm of arts and you will have a better business climate.

Answering your question:

When business is devoid of ethics, business people become too self-interested and their standards drop so low that they go along with anything (tolerate anything) that promises them profits. "Tolerating ugly behavior" means here allowing and engaging in bad practices in the trade.

tolerate ugly behaviour
التساهل وغض الطرف عن الممارسات السيئة كالغش والاحتيال مما يؤدي إلى استفحالها، وهذا السلوك لا يساهم في الرقي بعالم الاعمال

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for your explanation, but I am still confused with something. How would it be easier to tolerate ugly behaviour when the art is too far from the business world? Shouldn't it be the other way around? If the business world is implied to be containing ugly behavior when the influence of arts is absent from it, how can it be easier to tolerate the ugliness in the business world when art is too far away?

Asker: Oh, I thought "tolerate" here meant: endure/put up with, etc. Thank you, this really helped!

Explanation:
‘Aesthetics and ethics are closely linked and when the world of art is too far from business, it becomes easy to tolerate ugly behaviour.’

''Aesthetics and ethics'': refers to aesthetics and ethics in the world of art; the world of arts contains ''Aesthetics and ethics'', but when the world of art is seperated from business, then both ''Aesthetics and ethics'' are logically misssing, which leads to acceptance of bad behavior.
