An epidemiologic metric used to describe the contagiousness or transmissibility of infectious agents, which is usually estimated with complex mathematical models developed using various sets of assumptions. It is an estimate of the average number of new cases of a disease that each case generates, at a given point in time. R0 estimates for the virus that causes COVID-19 are around 2 to 3, which is slightly higher than that for seasonal influenza (R0 ~1.2-1.3), but far lower than more contagious diseases such as measles (R0 ~12 - 18).

Hoe groot is de kans om COVID-19 te krijgen? Hierbij is van belang vast te stellen hoe besmettelijk dit coronavirus is. Het ‘basaal reproductiegetal’, afgekort tot ‘R0’ (spreek uit: R-nul) is de eenheid waarin de besmettelijkheid van een virus wordt uitgedrukt. Het geeft aan aan hoeveel mensen iemand die het virus heeft gemiddeld het virus overdraagt. Het R0 gaat daarbij ervan uit dat niemand immuun is en dat er geen maatregelen zoals quarantaine van toepassing zijn. Het R0 precies vaststellen is moeilijk. Zo is het vaak niet precies duidelijk hoeveel mensen besmet zijn. Het R0 is deels dus gebaseerd op aannames en er kunnen daardoor ook flinke afwijkingen tussen de verschillende R0-metingen zijn. De schatting is nu dat het R0 van het COVID-19 virus ligt tussen de 2 en de 2,5. Dat houdt in dat de aanname is dat iemand die besmet is met COVID-19 dit gemiddeld overdraagt op iets meer dan 2 mensen. Een R0 van 2 tot 2,5 is niet heel hoog. Zo is de R0 van de gewone jaarlijkse griep gemiddeld 1,3.
