English term

chickpeas

English to Persian (Farsi) Science Botany Vegetables
Greetings,

I think that the peas which we eat for dinner, i.e. the small, green vegetables, are نخود.

However, I think that you use a different word for “chickpea” – do you add a diminutive suffix or something?

Please give the exact pronunciation, and let me know the exact meaning of the suffix.

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

Discussion

Ali Rahmani Nov 20, 2009:
Yes, I fully agree with your description of the chickpeas. Abgoosht and Ash are the best examples associating with Nokhod. Nokhodchi is the drivitive of the Nokhod as Edward said it is the roasted Nokhod.
Edward Plaisance Jr Nov 20, 2009:
chickpea context Simon, both "nokhod" and "nokhodchi" can be used for chickpea, as the suggestions mention. To expand on Hossein Abbasi Mohaghegh's answer, nokhodchi would more likely be the roasted kind that are found in mixed nuts and are eaten dry. Nokhod would be the regular chickpeas or garbanzos that would be used in cooking for Iranian "abgusht" or "ash" or Indian "channa", Mexican, etc. cooking. Nokhodsabz would be regular green peas.

The suffix is "چی", which is another verssion of "چه", a diminutive suffix.

Another laess common version of "نخودچی" is "نخودچه". The latter, I think, is used by Shirazis.

نخودچي

نخود بوداده . (فرهنگ نظام ). قسمي نخود که برشته کنند و آن جزو آجيل است .
نخود ريزه و کوچک تر از نخودهاي معمولي .
-مثل نخودچي ; به خردي و ريزي نخود.
so we can conclude that نخودچي is smaller than normal peas.

the pronunciation is /nokhodchi/

چي مانند «چه » علامت تصغير است و به تعبير بهتر عوام در مواردي «چه » را چي تلفظ کنند: نخودچي .
لحافچي . قباچي .
Therefore چي like چه is a diminutive suffix
