Gene names

English to French Medical Genetics Genetics
Hello,

I am proofreading a text on genetics and the translator has attempted to translate all gene names from English into French when they were spelt (for example "The chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 2 (CHD2) gene").

What is the gene naming convention? Do we actually translate them?

Many thanks,
Marion

You're asking about the name of a protein I'm sorry to be pedantic about this, but your question is about the name of a protein (i.e., chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 2) rather than a gene (i.e., CHD2 [should be in italics]). There's usually a correlation between the name of a protein and its structure or function (as is the case here with CHD2), but not always (i.e., sonic hedgehog or the SWI/SNF complex). In my opinion, if there's no need to explain the origin of the name, translating the name of the protein isn't necessary; just using "Le gène CHD2" is fine.

yes, translate them

We never translate gene symbols (obviously). However, we sometimes translate gene names and very often the names of the proteins they code for (in the case of protéin-coding genes).

acetylcholinesterase -> acétylcholinestérase
tubulin -> tubuline
etc.

agree Lionel-N : Bien évidemment; comme tu le dis, on n'écrit pas "tubulin" mais "tubuline". Cela dit, énormément de gènes n'ont pas de traduction officielle et, par ex, le gène "chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 2" (CHD2) qui reste en EN
