An epidemiologic metric used to describe the contagiousness or transmissibility of infectious agents, which is usually estimated with complex mathematical models developed using various sets of assumptions. It is an estimate of the average number of new cases of a disease that each case generates, at a given point in time. R0 estimates for the virus that causes COVID-19 are around 2 to 3, which is slightly higher than that for seasonal influenza (R0 ~1.2-1.3), but far lower than more contagious diseases such as measles (R0 ~12 - 18).

Az alap reprodukciós ráta, az R0 a járványtan kulcsfogalma, és vitathatatlanul az egyik legkorábbi és legértékesebb ismeret, amellyel a matematika hozzájárult a járványok elemzésének elméletéhez.<br /><br />Az általános definíció szerint az R0 azt adja meg, hogy egy fertőzött egyed egész élete alatt várhatóan hány másodlagos esetet okoz. <br /><br />Itt a másodlagos kifejezés kontextusfüggő, a járványtanban R0-t úgy értelmezzük, hogy az egyén az ő teljes fertőzési szakaszában várhatóan hány másik egyént fertőz meg. A definícióból következik, hogy ha R0 < 1, akkor minden fertőzött egyed átlagosan egynél kevesebb másik fertőzöttet produkál, tehát a betegség hosszútávon kihal a populációból. <br /><br />Ha R0 > 1, akkor a kór képes betörni az egészséges populációba.
