According to the 2001 Housing Census, which represents, at the moment, the main source of information of the Italian rental estimates, 0.6% of the dwellings belonged to cooperatives.
61% of these dwellings are classified as owner occupied, 36% as rented and 3% as other dwellings.
Italy added that, according to the Census data, cooperative dwellings with a low rental represented in 2001 a negligible part of ** housing cooperatives for tenancy **; the type of cooperative dwellings where households buy shares of a housing to have the right of living in and paying a low rental has not been separately identified.

cooperative a proprietà indivisa (meno diffusa): i soci aderiscono alla cooperativa con l’intento
di ottenere l’assegnazione in godimento a tempo indeterminato di un alloggio (è, praticamente, un contratto di locazione a tempo indeterminato). La cooperativa procede a realizzare degli immobili di civile abitazione che entrano a far parte del patrimonio della cooperativa stessa e che verranno concessi in godimento ai soci assegnatari, dietro pagamento di un canone di godimento (praticamente un canone di affitto).
