Definition:
Nella topologia a bus tutti i congegni sono direttamente connessi ad un mezzo trasmissivo lineare, il bus. Le estremità di un bus non sono tra loro collegate. Ad entrambe le estremità di un bus devono essere montati dei connettori cechi che si chiamano terminatori e che servono a garantire la corretta trasmissione dei segnali lungo il bus. Nella figura i nodi sono rappresentati da vari computer, un computer particolare che funge da file server, e un router che realizza il collegamento con l'esterno. Vi potrebbero essere anche altri congegni, come stampanti o altri tipi di server, ma le regole di trasmissione sono le stesse per tutti.

Un nodo che desidera trasmettere un messaggio (potrebbe essere un file) lo divide in pacchetti che invia uno alla volta. Quando un nodo invia un pacchetto ad un altro nodo il pacchetto si propaga sul mezzo condiviso in entrambe le direzioni. Il pacchetto sarà ricevuto da tutti i nodi ma solo il nodo a cui è indirizzato lo accetterà.
