Determination of the temperature at the Tc point by measuring in a control luminaire
In the same way that measurements are performed on luminaires according to EN 60598 part 1, operation can also be tested by performing measurements on control luminaires. To do this, the LED module is inserted in a case made of material with lower thermal conductivity. The temperatures are then measured in thermally stabilized operation using applied thermoelements. This method permits both the smallest possible case for the LED module and the temperature when fitted to the luminaire to be determined.
The method of measurement described here gives the absolute maximum temperature over the entire service life. However, given that the ambient temperature and, as a consequence, the Tc temperatures can fluctuate considerably over the day subject to the location of use (indoors or outdoors), it can be assumed that the life expectancy will most certainly be longer. Temperature is the biggest influence on degradation. If more precise information on life expectancy is required, the use of temperature recorders is recommended as these permit more temperatures to be recorded. With a set of curves supplied by the manufacturer for a diversity of temperatures and assuming a linear temperature change, the life expectancy can be determined using the set of curves. However, this should always be clarified with the manufacturers of the LED modules first.
