Medical (general)
Since narcolepsy is a genetic disorder, parents should be the ones to detect any symptoms that develop in their children. The first problem is lack of knowledge about all disorders of excessive daytime sleepiness and difficulty in getting a correct diagnosis. The second is that families are largely unaware that disorders of EDS are inheritable. Thirdly, even if someone has been diagnosed with narcolepsy or some other EDS disorder, they frequently fail to contact other family members to inform them of the potential for others having or developing some form of EDS. Consequently, families don’t know to be “on the lookout” for signs in their children.

Me parece que la construcción inglesa es un poco forzada "don't know to be on the lookout". Me sonaría mejor "don't know how to be on the lookout".
Pero en cualquier caso me parece adecuada una construcción como "En consecuencia, las familias no saben identificar los signos de la afección en los niños".
Espero que te ayude.

Mi dispiace molto! This was probably my mistake as I did not notice that the target language was Italian. Sorry my friend! :-)
