Stiamo parlando di reflusso gastro-esofageo (GER).
Il contesto:

E' un sinonimo di 'regurgitation' oppure è qualcosa d'altro?

Cambiamento di posizione?
Da quanto ho visto, sembrerebbe che nei neonati il riflusso gastrico causi una sorta di contrazione fisica nella quale il corpo cambia posizione — momento nel quale avviene il rigurgito del latte.
Onestamente non ne sono certissimo al 100%, ma sembrerebbe "filare" come ragionamento.

: Rigurgito è come dire che c'è vomito perché c'è vomito visto che sono sinonimi ! Il problema è perché c'è rigurgito ? C'è perché c'è espulsione di aria per "rutto" e di conseguenza c'è rigurgito !
