when packets of information are sent from computer to computer there is a procedure called "handshake" between the Server and the Client stations to count and identify which packet belongs with other bits of information that's to be accepted or resquested to re-send...Novell, Cisco, Microsoft and others use this method of communication between machines throughout the internet, intranet, etc
