A specular light is a “hard” light and a non-specular light is a “soft” light.
Visualize a vintage car parked at the beach.
It is noon on a clear blue sky day.
The edges of the shadows under the car are distinct and clearly defined.
The density of the shadow is deep, the diff erence between highlight and shadow density is great, the scene is considered to be high contrast.
The big chrome bumpers of the vintage car reflect the light source, the sun in the sky.
The specular reflection is small and intense.
This is called hard light.

Já descobri que SOFT LIGHT é traduzida como LUZ DIFUSA, mas não encontrei um termo consagrado para HARD LIGHT. Seria "Luz Causticante"?

A primeira coisa para tomar nota sobre assunto luz é que existem dois tipos de luzes, as duras e as luzes difusas. Quando falamos isso na realidade estamos tratando do assunto sombras:
Sombras duras – nelas conseguimos ver bem o contorno da sombra. A diferente entre sombra e luz é fácil de traçar.
Sombras difusas – mal notamos a diferença entre luz e sombra. Mas lembre-se que essa diferença ainda existe ou não perceberíamos o objeto como algo tridimensional. A diferença entre sombra e luz só está tão suave que mal notamos.
