If you don’t own a jointer, or your jointer is
too narrow for your stock, you can still work
wide planks into beautifully flat surfaces
with some initial prep work from a handplane.
Don’t worry. This is not the sweatdrenching
work our woodworking forebears
carried out when they worked without
power tools. Instead, it involves a sharp
plane and your thickness planer.
At the bench, clamp the plank that you
want to flatten cupped-side up, tapping
wedges under the board at key points to prevent
rocking. Use a long plane set for a fairly
heavy cut and plane the high spots on the
cupped face.Work the plane diagonally
across the face. As you plane, use a straightedge
and a pair of winding sticks to check
your progress, reading the face for cup and
twist. Don’t try to plane the entire surface;
just make sure the perimeter, or outer
edge, is flat.
