Помогите, пожалуйста, разобраться в разнице между profit и bottom line. Не думал, что придется искать различие, но столкнулся со следующим контекстом (в целом речь в тексте идет о реструктуризации системы участия сотрудников в прибылях)

If profit sharing payouts during the former transition had not been based on profits, where did the money come from to pay the overage in the past?
The transition had been designed in a way that would minimize the impact to employees. However, due to today’s challenging economic climate, payments had not been based upon profit and had essentially come off of the company’s bottom line.
