Gary, Maybe it's not that they're golddiggers, just that with the sum of money, he can now support a wife/family. Being a good husband is, of course, more than having money in your pockets.
I suspect that using the term 'good spec' and the construction 'as I won' instead of 'after I won' may indicate that the speaker is of a lower socio-economic strata and so, supporting a family may not have been within reach until this big win.
On the other hand, it may just be non-American English so I may not be picking up the nuances correctly.
