Словом "Orient" первоначально называли римские провинции в Азии (Diocese of the Orient). Позднее словом "Orient" стали называть Ближний и Средний Восток. Слово же "asian" применялось для обозначения Дальнего Востока, то есть Восточной Азии.
Поэтому oriental - это выходец с Ближнего или Среднего Востока (Сирия, Пакистан и т.п.), а "asian" - с Дальнего Востока (Китай и т.п.).
