Extraction Control (Blank)
Extraction is the process of removing and purifying the DNA from cells. It is the first step in the amplification process and uses chemicals to disrupt the cell. Frequently, the extraction step is accomplished using kits containing all of the required materials. The purpose of the extraction blank is to demonstrate that the extraction has not added any DNA to the sample. An extraction control (usually called the extraction blank) is created by performing all of the steps for extraction, amplification, and electrophoresis, but without adding the sample.
