English to Russian Medical Psychology hypochrondria - OCD
This is not the usual English meaning of "safety behaviors," such as wearing a seat belt in the car. It means rather the opposite: the excessive checking and rituals performed by people with hypochondria or OCD, such as checking 100 times to make sure you turned off the stove before leaving the house.

Then I`m sorry, Susan. Maybe you are right, I did read inattentively, as I was somehow surprised that 5 persons had agreed on the completely non-medical version of translation. Though surely I`m not insisting on my own translation as being "God`s truth".

To Natalia You misunderstood what I wrote -- please reread. I WAS looking for the Russian technical term, and what you and some others suggested is fine. The point is that the English technical term means one thing to laymen and another thing (the opposite) to professional psychologists. So I needed the Russian technical term. Thanks

To Susan If you, as you are saying yourself, do "NOT need what is meant in the specialized text" the question should not be put under the title "Medical - Psychology". The purpose of the text - a promotional document should be somehow indicated in the topic. Otherwise it misleads translators who sincerely want to help!

My purpose Actually, this is a promotional document for my own monolingual English editing, and a colleague is translating it into Russian. I used the English term "safety behaviors" as an example of when the layman's ordinary understanding is NOT what is meant in the specialized text, and therefore it is helpful for the author to call that to my attention as the editor (but without advanced degree in psychology). If there is no set term for this in Russian that has the same ambiguity, we will use the English phrase and a term or phrase in Russian that clarifies the technical meaning. Both of the answers so far provided would work.

Comment: "I think this one is closest to the English, in the sense that there is an ambiguity (to the layman) about whether these are normal or pathological (see my Discussion entry). All the more so since native speaker miridoli thought it might be necessary to add "при навязчивых/обсессивных состояниях" for clarity to the layman. многократное предотвращение потенциальной опасности

Для борьбы с обсессиями больные применяют защитные действия (компульсии). Действия представляют собой ритуалы, призванные предотвращать или минимизировать опасения. Такие действия, как: постоянное мытьё рук и умывание, сплёвывание слюны, многократное предотвращение потенциальной опасности (бесконечная проверка электроприборов, закрытия двери, закрытия молнии на ширинке), повторение слов, счёт. Например, с целью убедиться, что дверь закрыта, больному необходимо дёргать ручку определённое количество раз (при этом считать разы). Проведя ритуал, больной испытывает временное облегчение, переходя в «идеальное» постритуальное состояние. Однако спустя какое-то время всё повторяется заново.

Кстати, если нужен термин (а не описательный перевод), то вы легко можете взять "компульсии", потому что это оно и есть.

Здесь немножко про осторожность и ОКР:
Расстройство личности ананкастическое (МКБ 301.4) – личностная организация, присущая субъекту в течение всей его жизни, характеризующаяся ощущением отсутствия личной безопасности, сомнениями, чрезмерной добросовестностью, упрямством и осторожностью. Могут иметь место упорные и нежелательные мысли или действия, которые не достигают тяжести обсессивно-компульсивного расстройства. Характерна тщательность и педантичная точность, а также потребность в постоянных проверках для достижения этого. Могут наблюдаться выраженная ригидность и склонность к постоянным сомнениям [MDG]. Синонимы: компульсивная личность; обсессивная личность.
