Un notario puede supervisar la realización de una fotocopia de un documento original y dar fe de la veracidad de la copia.
Una copia notarial es como una copia fotostática, pero donde una persona con las atribuciones conferidas por el Estado, garantiza que es una copia fiel del docuemento original, y para ello elabora un documento que lo certifica y coloca su firma y sello.

Quizás no sea técnicamente exacto pues la xerografía hoy en día es tan solo una forma más de fotocopiado, pero al parecer todavía se utiliza en lenguaje notarial con este sentido.

: Hi Fernando. A "testimonio" is usually in fact a transcript, i.e., not a photocopy, but a transcription from the original entry in the "protocolo".//Yes, Fernando, I should have mentioned my context (Mexico), and that they can be that too.

Thanks, Robert. In Uruguay photocopies authenticated by notaries public are used, accepted, and called "testimonios notariales" or simply "testimonios". I can attest to this, since I have translated a few of them!
