A write-in adjustment is a type of deduction that reduces your gross income without having to itemize. Write-in adjustments can lower your taxable income thereby lowering the amount of tax that you may have to pay.

Any deductions from income not aken on Schedule A (Itemized deductions) are found on page one of the 1040 return. They are called adjustments to income. The line just above the total adjustemnts line has a space to write in some rare but allowable adjustments. Some examples are reforestation amortization, Archer MSA, repayment of supplemental unemployment, etc. They would be indicated by an achronym and the amount that is included in the total.
Line 36 refers to the 2006 1040. Prior years could be different, because some adjustments that had to be taken that way now have their own separate line--jury pay and qualified performing artist.
