The other day, I was reading something that was said to be “fullproof.”

I was pretty sure it was incorrect, but there it was in print, so I thought there may have been a chance that the writer was correct. So I looked it up.

I’m happy to report that in this specific case, I wasn’t the “fool.” See what I did there?

Foolproof refers to something being so simple that even a fool couldn’t screw it up. That may not be the most polite thing to say, granted, but that’s what it means. Etymology Online says the word, which can also be hyphenated, originated in 1902. That source defines it as, “safe against the incompetence of a fool.”

Foolproof can also be used as a verb, although I’ve seen this type of usage much less often. One can “foolproof a plan,” for example, to remove vulnerabilities that a person with limited skills or talent might inadvertently stumble over.

That brings us to the other option: fullproof. Actually, there’s no such word. Foolproof may have been misheard and transcribed as “fullproof.” Paul Brians, who wrote Common Errors in English Usage, says anyone who is working through a complicated math problem “will have to provide a full proof

bence yazım hatası. Çünkü bu deyim yani fool-proof, özellikle Almanlarda çok yaygın (idiotensicher), anlamı: o kadar güvenilir bir sistem ki, aptallar dahi bir zarar veremez demek.
