savoury

Non-PRO English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
So your first challenge
is to make a savoury picnic pie.
When you cut into it
we'd like some kind of design inside.
Remember it is for a picnic,
so it should be presented out of the tin.
The reason why we chose
the savoury picnic pie in this challenge.

Is 'savourvy picnic pie' a type of specific pie? I mean, does savory here means yummy or delicious, or is it just a salty or spicy pie?

David Hollywood May 21, 2020:
I think that despite specific definitions of "savoury" the writer just means "tasty and not sweet"

I'm ok with all the comments on this but the bottom line is to transmit the idea and feeling of the source text so I'll stick to my guns here

not sweet

I know David said this as a part of his answer, but his emphasis is wrong in my opinion. We're not trying to get viewers' mouths watering - this simply means that the pie is not sweet. Apples and cherries are sweet, potatoes and onions are savory.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Yes, precisely! This is clearly what the context requires. In general contexts, 'savoury' opposes 'sweet'.

agree AllegroTrans : sweet and savoury; clear opposites. Surely both can be "tasty"?

attractive to the sense of taste or smell

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Not here! Clearly, there would be no logic to their asking for a pie that was UNattractive, which would be the logical opposition to this!

neutral philgoddard : As opposed to "we're going to make an unsavory pie"?

disagree Yvonne Gallagher : not an explanation of savoury

Savoury food is salty or spicy and not sweet in taste.

this is for a tv show so they're always looking for something out of the ordinary

we need terms that get the viewers mouth to water

"savoury" literally means "spicy" or "salty" as opposed to "sweet" but I think you could also add "tasty" to get the viewers' taste buds going

neutral philgoddard : I don't agree with your initial answer. It's nothing to do with how good it tastes, in my opinion.

neutral Tony M : Like Phil, i don't think this is qualitative; nor do I especially thing it is 'spicy': it just means 'not sweet'

neutral Yvonne Gallagher : only thing I agree with is "not sweet"
